Does Spring Mean More Ants?

As we come to the end of winter, we all look forward to heading back outdoors to enjoy the pleasures of spring, where the sun is shining, the trees are turning green, the flowers are blossoming and the ants are scurrying around.

Yes the pesky little ants are back! You thought you had them under control during the winter months and now you see a trail of ants walking across your kitchen bench, your kids come from playing outside with ant bites! One of the best ways to keep the ants away from your home is to try and prevent them in the first place. Ants are coming into your home in search of food so the key is to make your home uninviting to ants.

How do I do this? I hear you ask

The first step you can take to help keep the ants away are:

Inside

• Take out the trash regularly
• Clean up spills
• Keep cupboards clean
• Keep honey, sugar, lollies in closed containers
• Pick up any lollies the kids may have dropped
• Clear out crumbs from toasters & under the microwave

Outside

• Keep trees and shrubs trimmed back from your house.
• Keep gutters and storm drains free of debris.
• Watch for new ant mounds or nests around your home.
• Keep trash bags sealed and in closed garbage cans.
• Seal doors and windows

Chemical Treatments

Spraying surface sprays will kill off the surface ants, but it will not eradicate the entire nest, however, if you do decide the spray the surface ants, be wary of kids and pets that may be around and also ensure that you clean up the spray once the ants have died.
