PESTS THAT MAY BE BUGGING YOUR PETS

Here is a list of some of the pests that might be bothering you household pets:

Ticks

Ticks need to be removed as soon as possible

  • Ticks transmit terrible diseases including Lyme disease which can infect humans too
  • If the tick is on your pet for too long your pet may be at risk of getting tick paralysis

Fleas

Fleas are external parasites which fests on the blood of their hosts. Fleas mostly infect dogs and cats.

  • Flea bites can cause an intense itching or allergic reaction
  • If fleas are on your pet for too long they are at risk of getting anaemia ( lethargy , rapid breathing , weakness and leading to death) Please consult with a Vet should your pets have these symptoms
  • Some fleas can transmit your pets with tapeworms ( Weight Loss , discomfort , appetite changes , vomiting , diarrhoea ) Please consult with your Vet if your pets are displaying these symptoms

SPIDERS

Not always a very common occurrence but should a spider bite your pets please consult with a Vet as the spider might be poisonous , here are a few of the symptoms to look out for :

  • Mild redness at bite site
  • A Pain reaction and licking the bite
  • Swelling where the bite is
  • Muscle cramping
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Tremors
  • Lethargy
  • Fever

BEES & WASPS

some pets may barely have a reaction if stung while others have the potential of a serious or fatal reaction. Monitor very closely for the following signs:

  • Swelling around the neck or head
  • Rash
  • Watery Eyes
  • Weakness or collapsing
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Seizures
  • Respiratory Distress

In the case of any of these reactions it is always important to seek veterinary treatment and advice

BED BUGS

Bed Bugs will also tend on feeding from pets as a host . Luckily, no diseases have been known to be spread to pets by bed bugs and they are not dangerous. If you suspect or know you have bed bugs in your home, it is important to check your pet’s bedding as they might be hiding

MOSQUITOES

Mosquito bites are a more common accurance on pets and might be prone to infect pets with diseases such as Heartworm disease which can be fatal to your pets , Here are some of the symptoms :

  • Lethargy
  • Coughing
  • Vomiting
  • Disorientation
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Exercise intolerance

Luckily, prevention is rather easy with heartworm medication
