Mental Health Awareness Week โ€“ Worms of the Mind

This is known as Delusory Parasitosis.

What is Delusory Parasitosis ?

Delusory parasitosis also known as Ekbom Syndrome is the belief that the body is infested with invisible bugs, mites, worms or other parasites.

What happens to people with Delusory Parasitosis ?

People who suffer from this disorder get the feeling of crawling bugs below their skin. The sensation feels very real, and can often lead them to dig into their skin in order to try to find and remove these invisible bugs with items such as:

  • Fingernails
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Knives

People who suffer from this disorder will often seek assistance from their local GP, dermatologists, mental health professionals or even veterinarians.

Many times, pest control companies are also contacted, asking about biting insects.

What causes Delusory Parasitosis ?

Research has found that this problem can be caused by :

  • Stress
  • Reactions to use or abuse of prescription or illicit drugs
  • Allergic sensitivity
  • Dry skin
  • Mechanical irritants
  • Skin cancers
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Protein deficiencies
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Delusory parasitosis.
