The Australian cockroach is noticeably larger than the common German cockroach variety. Australian cockroaches are common household pests and transmit disease by contaminating food and the surfaces they contact. Their name 'periplaneta australisiae' is somewhat misleading as they are not native to Australian and were, in fact, an introduced species from Asia.
AUSTRALIAN COCKROACH IDENTIFICATION
The Australian cockroach is similar in appearance to the American cockroach but differs in size. The American cockroach is smaller in size and has a yellow margin on the upper part of the torso. It is 3-cm to 3.5-cm long and the wings of both sex cover the abdomen area. The female has a larger abdomen than the male.
HABITS & LIFECYCLE
Australian cockroaches are common in leaf litter, in and around shrubs, trees, flowers, tree holes, wood piles, garages, subfloor or crawl spaces, roof cavities or attics and greenhouses. It is an issue when they enter the homes.
The cycle for the Australian cockroach from egg to adult is one year. It takes 40 days to hatch from the ootheca or egg casing. There are 24 eggs per casing, 16 of which will then hatch. Each female cockroach produces 20-30 eggs. Nymphs take about a year to hatch but not all of them mature.
HOW TO CONTROL AUSTRALIAN COCKROACHES
The Australian cockroach is found outdoors.
Treatments to prevent them from coming are environmentally and entomologically sound. Barrier sprays around the home have shown that it reduces the amount of Australian cockroach.
Power dusting of sewerage lines, crawl spaces, false ceilings, wall voids and garbage chutes is highly recommended and very effective.
AUSTRALIAN COCKROACH TREATMENT
Australian cockroaches are treated using a general spray which includes treatment of roof voids, internal skirting boards and external areas.
Roof: Dust/powder is sprayed into the roof cavity by the means of a dust gun. The technician will use a ladder to access the roof cavity through the manhole and the dust will be spread throughout this area.
Internal: An internal barrier spray will be applied to the skirting boards throughout the house. All rooms will be treated with the skirting board spray. Dust may also be applied to any cracks & crevices within the house
Sub Floor: Dust/powder will be sprayed into the area under the house.
External: Spray will be applied to the following areas: around windows, gutters, fascias etc. Garages, sheds, pathways, fence lines, laundry, weep holes, cracks and crevices and Telstra pits
Protecting Your Home
- Seal cracks, crevices or gaps in sliding doors, window screens and around pipes where cockroaches may enter
- Repair any leaking taps as cockroaches need water to survive
- Wash your dishes and pack food away after meals
- Clean up crumbs and spills immediately
- Keep food containers sealed and don’t leave dirty dishes out overnight.
- Don’t leave fruit on the countertop.
- Empty garbage bins and vacuum and mop frequently
- Keep the house clean!
How Does the Spray Work?
The spray that is used for large cockroaches also covers you for other pests such as webbing spiders, red back spiders, carpet beetles, silverfish, creamy coloured crickets and any existing wasp nests.
The spray and dust method used for large cockroach control not only eradicates the current population but will also provide long term protection as a residual protection is formed.
A cockroach will walk over this barrier and meet this barrier, and as cockroaches tend to lick themselves clean they end up digesting the poison.
